How Florida Regulates Pharmacy Technicians
Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Florida asks for no national exam at all. Plenty of technicians here still earn certification voluntarily — a national credential strengthens job applications and moves with you if you relocate to a stricter state.
What the Board and State Law Actually Say
Registration is required under s. 465.014, F.S.; statute caps fees at $50 application and $50 biennial registration. National certification (PTCE/ExCPT) is neither required nor accepted in lieu of the training program; a grandfather clause covered persons registered before January 1, 2011 with 1,500+ hours of experience or national certification. Other requirements: criminal background screening (fingerprint retention fee $43.25 per s. 456.0135, F.S., collected at renewal when retention expires) and health-care-fraud disqualification screening (s. 456.0635, F.S.). Board rules are in Chapter 64B16, F.A.C. A MOBILE Act endorsement pathway exists for technicians licensed in other states with 2+ years of active practice in the preceding 4 years. Training, Education, and Eligibility in Florida
Training requirement
Completion of a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program is statutorily mandatory (s. 465.014, F.S.) and cannot be waived - the Board states PTCB certification 'cannot be used in lieu of the completion of a Board-approved training program.' Approved programs include those offered by institutions accredited by USDOE-recognized accrediting agencies, ASHP, SACSCOC, or the Council on Occupational Education; programs licensed by the Florida Commission for Independent Education; Florida public school system programs meeting the state curriculum framework; and federal armed services programs developed on or before June 1, 2018. Employer-run programs qualify if Board-approved.

Starting Out: Trainee Status in Florida
No trainee registration category. Students enrolled in an approved training program may work in a pharmacy for practical training purposes without being registered, and must wear identification indicating student status (s. 465.014, F.S.).
