Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Louisiana

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Louisiana is one of the few where a national exam is not a nice-to-have — it is the credential itself.

National certification is baked into the rules here: the board accepts the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and you cannot get credentialed without it. That makes exam prep part of the path — not an optional extra.

Louisiana mandates passage of a board-approved national exam before the state Pharmacy Technician Certificate is issued: PTCB's PTCE (certificate dated 2000 or later) or NHA's ExCPT (certificate dated 2018 or later). Certificate applicants must be at least 18 and non-impaired; candidates in a Louisiana DOE Jump Start career program may register at 16. No high school diploma/GED requirement appears in the candidate qualifications rule (LAC 46:LIII.903). The board will not extend a candidate registration to accommodate exam retakes.

Pharmacy Technician Candidate (PTC) registration ($50) is the training credential; it authorizes work under pharmacist supervision while training, expires 24 months after issuance, and is not renewable. Eligibility: enrollment in an accredited/board-approved program (18+), a Louisiana Dept. of Education pharmacy-technician career-path program (16+, employment certificate if under 18), or pharmacist-provided on-the-job training (18+).
