What the Board and State Law Actually Say
Maine licenses (rather than registers) pharmacy technicians under the Maine Pharmacy Act, 32 MRS ch. 117 (see 32 MRS 13721) and Board Rule Chapter 7 (02-392 CMR ch. 7, amended effective Jan 1, 2025). Technicians work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, who must physically review each prescription order a technician prepares. Licensees must notify the board within 10 days of a change in work site, cessation of employment, or change of contact address. No minimum age, education, exam, or national certification requirement appears in the rule.
Training, Education, and Eligibility in Maine
Training requirement
Employer-based: each pharmacy that employs technicians must develop or deploy its own training program, keep a copy on site, and the pharmacist in charge (or designated Maine-licensed pharmacist) must train each technician in accordance with it (Board Rule Ch. 7, Section 2). No board-approved program, exam, or national certification is required. Training or employment may not begin until the board has issued the license.
Starting Out: Trainee Status in Maine
None. There is no trainee tier; the rule prohibits commencing training or employment as a pharmacy technician until the license has been issued by the board (Board Rule Ch. 7, Section 1(4)).
