Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Rhode Island

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Rhode Island sits in the licensing group — the most restrictive model, where the Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy checks your eligibility before you can start work.

National certification is voluntary in Rhode Island, but not irrelevant: the board recognizes the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and many pharmacies prefer — or effectively require — certified technicians. A national credential also moves with you if you relocate to a stricter state.

Rhode Island licenses two technician levels through the Department of Health's Board of Pharmacy: Pharmacy Technician I (no certification; requires Pharmacist-in-Charge Affidavit) and Pharmacy Technician II (current PTCB or NHA ExCPT certification). National certification is required only for the Technician II level. Applicants need an NABP e-Profile ID. Technicians work under the direction and supervision of a licensed pharmacist (regulation 216-RICR-40-15-1, which defines Technician II as holding current certification from PTCB or another Board-approved national certifying organization). The Department states its healthri.mylicense.com portal is the only official real-time verification of license status. The Board's application also requires tax-compliance certification under R.I. The Pharmacy Technician I license functions as the entry level: it requires a completed Pharmacist-in-Charge Affidavit from the supervising pharmacist (with pharmacy name and address) and no national certification, allowing on-the-job work before or without certification.
