Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Utah

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Utah sits in the licensing group — the most restrictive model, where the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) / Utah State Board of Pharmacy checks your eligibility before you can start work.

National certification is baked into the rules here: the board accepts the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and you cannot get credentialed without it. That makes exam prep part of the path — not an optional extra.

Utah licenses (not merely registers) pharmacy technicians under the Pharmacy Practice Act, Utah Code 58-17b (qualifications at 58-17b-305: application, fee, background check, training program per division rule, and passing the required exams). Exam requirement per R156-17b-303c(4): pass the PTCB (PTCE) or ExCPT with the certifying body's passing score, with active certification. Out-of-state applicants qualify with 1,000 hours of technician practice in the past two years (or equivalent) plus current, maintained PTCB or ExCPT certification (R156-17b-303a(6)). No minimum age or high-school education requirement was located in the statute or rule. The DOPL website (dopl.utah.gov, commerce.utah.gov) was behind a Cloudflare challenge during this research, so the current fee schedule could not be verified; CE and rule text were confirmed from the state's published rule documents.

Pharmacy technician trainee license permits supervised practice while completing training; if the trainee does not obtain the full pharmacy technician license within the two-year window, the entire training program must be repeated (R156-17b-303a(4)).
