Pharmacy Tech Requirements in Vermont

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. Vermont sits in the registration group: the board keeps the official technician roster, and getting on it is what makes you legal to work.

Vermont asks for no national exam at all. Plenty of technicians here still earn certification voluntarily — a national credential strengthens job applications and moves with you if you relocate to a stricter state.

Vermont registers pharmacy technicians through the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR); national certification is NOT mandatory - it is one of several qualifying paths alongside Board-approved training (including employer-provided training). Current administrative rules effective February 1, 2026. The rules require certification by a 'Board-approved national certifying authority' but do not name specific exams; confirm accepted certifying bodies with OPR before listing PTCE/ExCPT. Persons solely cashiering or delivering drugs need not register. Statutory basis: 26 V.S.A. ch. 36 (definition at 26 V.S.A. § 2022). Scope: trainee and technician work under pharmacist delegation/supervision; fully registered technicians (not trainees) may participate in a Technician Product Verification Program (Rule 4-8).

Technician-trainee registration (a specialty on the technician registration) is available to applicants at least 16 years old with no training prerequisite. It is valid for 4 years and is not renewable, but may be extended 1 year for good cause; the trainee specialty is removed once proof of completed training or certification is uploaded (Board Rules 4-5, 4-6; application instructions).
