Pharmacy Tech Requirements in West Virginia

Every US state chooses its own way to regulate pharmacy technicians. Of the 51 jurisdictions we track, 33 use registration, 14 issue a full license, 3 tie the state credential to national certification, and 1 requires no state credential at all. West Virginia sits in the registration group: the board keeps the official technician roster, and getting on it is what makes you legal to work.

National certification is baked into the rules here: the board accepts the PTCE (PTCB) or the ExCPT (NHA), and you cannot get credentialed without it. That makes exam prep part of the path — not an optional extra.

Statutory basis: W. Va. Code §§ 30-5-11 (technicians) and 30-5-11a (trainees); rules at 15CSR7 (technicians, current version effective 7/1/2026) and 15CSR16 (renewal/fees, effective 4/23/2026). No state CE requirement for technicians appears in 15CSR7; however, renewal for anyone registered on/after July 1, 2014 requires proof of current national certification, so PTCB/NHA recertification (which has its own CE requirements) effectively applies. Fee discrepancy: 15CSR16 § 5.1.4 sets the biennial renewal at $20 (reinstatement within 1 year: $50 + renewal fee), while the Board's technician renewal page lists a $30 renewal fee ($50 total after June 30 including $20 late fee) - confirm current amount with the Board. Registration also available via the Universal Professional and Occupational Licensing Act of 2025 (W. Va. Code § 30-1-27) for out-of-state registrants establishing WV residence or military spouses. Minimum age is not specified in statute or rule.

Pharmacy technician trainee permit: an individual may work as a trainee only while enrolled in a Board-approved school/training-center program (experiential component) or while employed in the 500-hour on-the-job competency-based program. The trainee must pass the ExCPT or PTCE and obtain CPhT certification before the trainee permit expires; otherwise they must stop working as a trainee (15CSR7 §§ 4.2-4.4).
